Hoss's Game-Winner Lifts Cats in OT Thriller

Cool Cat season ends with dramatic victory over Duke

Whenever Kentucky and Duke meet, there is always a dramatic finish.

Sunday morning was no exception as Colin Hoss lifted the UK Cool Cats (12-15-1, 4-6 Tri-State Collegiate Hockey League) in their 5-4 overtime victory over the Duke Blue Devils (8-12).

On Senior Night, forward Pete Notkin and goalie Justin Clark were doing all they could to send off Alex Derhohannesian, Justin Smither and Aaron Stephenson with a victory.

"Beating Duke in overtime isn't a bad way to go out," Derhohannesian said.

The game matched the size and power of UK versus the speed of Duke. Duke's evasive forwards gave UK fits from time to time. UK's Josh McConnell and Rob Dennis, among others, tried to wear down Duke by physically punishing them.

The first fifteen minutes of the game Duke's fast-forwards kept the pressure on Clark. Clark responded with stopping all fourteen first period shots.

At 15:18 in the first, UK's Alex Poulos scored on a pass from behind the net by Notkin.

Over a minute later, Hoss's shot from the blue line bounced off Duke goalie Marc Roitman and Wes McDaniel cleaned it up giving the Cats a 2-0 lead.

The high-flying line of Poulos, Notkin and Smither connected at 18:34 in the period. On a two-on-one break Smither passed the puck in front of the goal and Notkin scored the one-timer.

Duke's Jeff Lake scored first in the second period. At 2:14 into the period, Lake weaved through the UK defense and slapped a shot past an outstretched Clark to cut the score to 3-1.

While on a power play midway through the period, Clark made a crucial save sequence.

Late in the period Clark robbed a one-timer from Brian Markowitz, ensuring that UK would take a 3-1 lead into the third period.

Clark's brilliance in net proved troublesome for Duke in the first two periods. He stopped 34 out of 35 shots.

McDaniel scored his second goal on the night only thirty seconds into the third period to put the Cats up 4-1.

UK afforded the shorthanded Blue Devils - only nine skaters - the opportunity to comeback via the power play.

Sloppy passing and power play disadvantages would haunt the Cats in the period.

Jeff Lake scored his second goal on the night on a five-on-three power play to cut the lead to two goals. He completed the hat trick - his second on the season - on a five-on-four power play less than a minute later.

After another Duke goal at 15:22, the game was tied at 4-4.

Duke was ready for the kill after three unanswered power play goals. However, as they have done all season long, the Cool Cats fought back. After a power outage and several near goals, the game was headed to overtime.

Coach Phil Sweeney's troops came out fighting in the overtime session. The Cats kept the puck in the zone of the tired Duke defense for the short period.

At 59 seconds into overtime, Colin Hoss blasted the game-winner from the high slot past Roitman for the 5-4 victory. The team rushed to the ice to celebrate their dramatic victory.

"This is such a great way to win a game," Sweeney said. "Our guys never give up."
